Dentures
A denture is a removable restoration that replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. There are two types of dentures: conventional and immediate. A conventional denture is constructed when all the teeth are missing. It requires five appointments, each spaced one week apart to assure proper fit and aesthetics. An immediate denture is recommended when a patient has a few remaining teeth that need to be extracted due to disease. After extraction, the mouth requires 8 to 12 weeks of healing before denture construction can begin. As most patients are unwilling to wait toothless, an immediate denture is constructed. An immediate denture will not fit as well as a conventional one and, as tissue and bone will change during the healing process, an immediate denture will loosen, often requiring a reline procedure approximately 3 months later to tighten the fit.
